Introducing the Soil Organic Carbon Model (SOC) Created for Perennial Systems

Measuring soil carbon is complex, especially in perennial systems like coffee, cocoa or nuts, in which roots, leaf litter and ground cover build organic matter over time. Existing models were mainly developed for annual crops, and are therefore unable to reflect the carbon content of perennial crops with permanent soil cover and complex plant growth.

Solidaridad recently tested the new Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) model within the Perennial Pathway on the new Cool Farm Platform, to explore how digital solutions can help both businesses and farmers get a grip on Scope 3 emissions. The SOC model enables more accurate Scope 3 calculations for businesses and empowers farmers to access sustainability incentives and emission-reduction projects within supply chains, also known as insetting.

Most traditional models rely on averages, assuming, for example, that all farmland emits or stores the same amount of carbon each year. But in reality, soil carbon content is influenced by:

• Crop type (e.g. cocoa vs. banana trees)
• Crop management (e.g. compost, cover crops, residue use)
• Weather (using monthly satellite-based data)

In contrast, the SOC model simulates how carbon moves into and out of the soil in real-world scenarios, allowing the user greater flexibility in options. Developed through a science-driven process, it’s designed to be both accurate and user-friendly, especially for smallholder perennial systems.

Field-Tested in the Climate Heroes Programme

Solidaridad tested the SOC model in the Climate Heroes programme, working with smallholder coffee and cocoa farmers in East & Central Africa. Our teams supported the field testing, Solidaridad provided financial contributions to the model development and trained local teams. The staff helped farmers to collect, maintain and validate the required data, making MRV (Monitoring, Reporting, Verification) accessible and scalable for smallholders. 

The goal of this work is to adapt the tool to local conditions – a crucial step in turning complex data into actionable strategies for both farms and organisations. To make this possible, our staff receive ongoing training in the use of the Cool Farm Platform – as seen here in Central America in May 2025.

What It Means for Farmers

Better soil carbon data empowers farmers by linking their day-to-day management decisions directly to measurable climate impact, such as adopting regenerative practices like using organic inputs.

Companies in agricultural supply chains, including traders and roasters,  are under increasing pressure to report and reduce Scope 3 emissions as part of their climate commitments.

The SOC model helps by:

• Supporting insetting projects and investments in regenerative practices
• Providing data integrity with peer-reviewed science and uncertainty analysis

This enhanced digital platform helps farmers and agribusinesses to make data-driven decisions for crops like coffee, while enabling traders and roasters to measure, monitor, and reduce emissions across their supply chains. Ultimately, this helps all actors to align directly with the demands of sustainable markets. 

Beyond sharpening technical expertise in the region, this training cemented Solidaridad’s role as a trusted advisor in carbon footprint management, a critical resource for companies decarbonizing their supply chains and buyers decarbonizing their operations.

Next Steps: From Root to Reporting

Solidaridad integrates cutting-edge science, digital tools and grassroots experience to offer technological answers to current challenges. Using our global tools and local expertise will provide companies actionable and measurable results. 

Through the SOC model, Solidaridad, Cool Farm and other sustainability-driven companies are able to collaborate more effectively and engage more directly with farmers. By fostering trusted partnerships with farming communities, Solidaridad supports on-the-ground implementation and fieldwork. The SOC model is now available to Cool Farm Members – and the wider public – as part of Cool Farm Platform 3.0.

Cool Farm is a global non-profit  membership organisation that brings together over 160 entities from the agri-food sector, including the world’s largest companies, non-governmental organisations, scientific institutions, and farmer groups. Agraves joined the Cool Farm Alliance in 2024, thereby joining a global community working towards sustainable agriculture.

The integration of the Elvio platform with the Cool Farm Tool was achieved through an API. As a result, Elvio users – Polish farmers and advisors – gain direct access to the advanced calculation functions of the Cool Farm Tool within their familiar platform. This connection enables precise calculation of farm environmental indicators, in particular the carbon footprint and other sustainability indicators, based on data already collected in Elvio. These results can then be used for analysis, planning emission reduction and carbon sequestration activities, as well as for reporting, e.g., for supply chain needs or new agricultural support programmes.

Q: As someone who is clearly very passionate about sustainable agriculture and helping businesses make the change to more sustainable processes, why, in your view, is third-party verification important for CFP?

A: I feel it is all about maximising the credibility of the tool. Cool Farm is underpinned by rigorous science and a fully transparent methodology, which is integral to its credibility. External verification can only strengthen this and add an extra layer of trust to the platform.

Essentially, it reassures users that the high standards of accuracy, reliability, and transparency that we claim for the tool have been tested and verified by a credible third party.

Q: During your time with Cool Farm, you’ve been clear that external verification is one of the most important things that needs to be achieved. What motivates you personally about the verification process?

A: For me, it is about empowering producers and businesses in the food supply chain to be able to make tangible, measurable change. Obviously, to achieve this, they need accurate and reliable tools, but in an increasingly packed space, how can people identify which platform will provide that?

External verification is a useful way to demonstrate this. It goes back to the credibility issue we spoke about earlier. It is not just Cool Farm saying the Cool Farm Platform is accurate and transparent, but an independent third party. That is why I am so passionate about this journey.

Q: Without mentioning specific deliverables, what does the verification process generally involve?

A: The process began with the 3Keel review back in 2023, which was then followed with a review stage that was completed last year. The formal verification to ensure consistency should take place this year.

During the review, our methodology, user interface, and guidance were assessed, with recommendations provided for verification.

Evaluation was conducted on the platform’s consistency with key standards including the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard), ISO 14067 (carbon footprint of products), Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) FLAG requirements, and WRI Land Sector and Removals Guidance (LSRG), and feedback focused on improvements to enhance credibility and practical usability for users.

It is an in-depth process that takes time to complete. But that is what makes it valuable and gives verification its integrity.

Q: What will this verification mean for our members and users of CFP?

A: Verification is a very positive step for our members and users. It proves that Cool Farm Platform is a credible and accurate tool for on-farm GHG assessments, helping members report emissions and removals confidently to support their sustainability goals.

Ultimately, it provides is peace of mind. Members can be assured that the methodology aligns with the guidelines they report to and base their decisions on. This ensures clarity on the impact of their choices on both their business and the environment.

Q: What would you say to members who need more information about the significance of this verification?

A: Verification is a step forward in ensuring trust and transparency. It demonstrates that Cool Farm is not only committed to providing scientifically robust tools but also to aligning with the highest international standards.

However, we understand that members might want a deeper understanding of the process and what it entails as we move forward. To help keep all of our stakeholders up to date, we will be updating our website as the process continues. We invite any members who want a more in-depth understanding of how verification will benefit them to join our standards Working Group.

Q: What are the broader implications for the agricultural sector if more tools are verified for accuracy and reliability?

A: The implications of demonstrably accurate sustainability reporting tools on agriculture are profound. It has the potential to drive meaningful change in sustainability and climate action on a global scale.

Of course, there needs to be widespread adoption of such tools for this to happen, but I believe that as everyone in the food supply chain gains a greater understanding of both the issue and how agriculture could be one of the biggest drivers of climate mitigation, adoption, measurement, and most importantly meaningful decision making, will become the norm.

Making the Internal Case for Change 

Presenting regenerative agriculture as a strategy for building long-term resilience amidst climate change is compelling. However, companies still face the significant challenge of balancing short-term financial pressures and conflicting internal KPIs with the longer-term return on regenerative agriculture investments. Adding to the complexity is the high cost and difficulty of accurately measuring the environmental impact of these initiatives. 

To navigate this successfully, Catherine McCosker of 3Keel emphasised that successful buy-in starts with leadership and culture and this requires the framing of regenerative agriculture in commercial terms that resonate across the business.

While this alone is enough for some organisations, external levers such as regulatory pressures, consumer demand for sustainable products, and peer influence (such as with the adoption of Science Based Targets) are powerful drivers of internal change.  

Co-Create Solutions 

Margaret Henry, Vice President of Sustainable Agriculture, PepsiCo, echoed Catherine’s insights, emphasising the importance of listening to stakeholder needs and co-creating solutions to meet these. This helps to ensure that regenerative agriculture remains relevant to diverse audiences, from procurement and finance teams to farmers and external stakeholders. Regenerative agriculture’s context-specific nature often allows for a flexible outcome-focused approach, enabling the co-creation of solutions to help address the unique needs of each context. 

Start Small and Scale 

Margaret also shared how PepsiCo measured progress by starting regenerative agriculture initiatives in regions with stakeholders that were already open to adoption of regenerative practices. Early “quick wins” helped build momentum, helping to secure broader buy-in within the business. The key, she noted, is starting small with high-potential opportunities, and building results-backed momentum over time.  PepsiCo scaled these efforts once initial pilots proved successful, making regenerative agriculture a core part of PepsiCo’s Positive Agriculture agenda. 

Partnerships and Finance for Scaling  

Scaling regenerative agriculture requires collaboration beyond the company alone. Kyle Rudzinski of Pollination Capital Partners pointed out the importance of innovative financing models such as blended capital, which combine corporate funding and impact investment along with government funding and grants to reduce risk and incentivise farmer participation in regenerative agriculture projects. Tim Crosby from TIFS highlighted how donor agencies like USAID provide first-loss capital reducing risk for private investors, facilitating larger-scale initiatives. 

The Road Ahead 

The clear message for companies from this session of Regen Reflections was to take the time to fully understand and align stakeholder needs before moving forward, to leverage existing initiatives where possible, and lastly, to pool resources through partnerships.  

Securing internal buy-in and building a strong business case for regenerative agriculture requires cross-sector collaboration, innovative financing, and a long-term view. As momentum builds, more examples of successful multi-stakeholder initiatives will be shared in the upcoming webinars.

We have been overwhelmed by the level of interest and engagement from the farming and agricultural industry, reflecting the critical need for transparent and accurate tools in carbon measurement.  

On September 11, 2024, Farm Carbon Toolkit, Cool Farm Alliance, and Agrecalc hosted a joint webinar to discuss their newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at harmonising greenhouse gas (GHG) emission methodologies.  

This collaboration marks a significant step toward providing UK agriculture with consistent, science-backed tools to measure and reduce GHG emissions. 

During the webinar, representatives from all three organisations highlighted the importance of this partnership in enhancing transparency, aligning data sources, and improving the overall accuracy of carbon calculators. The collaboration seeks to support industry-wide sustainability goals while maintaining each calculator’s unique approach.

One attendee noted, “I am pleased you all recognise the value of commanding trust from the farming/agriculture industry. Thank you for your presentations. Farmers simply want to know that they are dealing with tools that are standardised and achieve the accurate answer for whatever is being measured.” 

The discussion also covered the commitment to align with initiatives like the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi FLAG) and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Land Sector Removals Guidance, ensuring that the latest scientific advancements are integrated into their tools. The goal is to establish a consistent framework that could become the industry standard for carbon calculations. 

Another attendee echoed the desire for ongoing updates, asking, “Thank you to Agrecalc, Farm Carbon Toolkit, and Cool Farm Tool for taking this forward.” 

These reflections underscore the pressing need for consistency and transparency across carbon calculation tools and methodologies, and we are committed to continuing this work. 

The webinar attracted nearly 500 live attendees, with over 100 questions submitted. We are thankful for the engagement and will be responding to these questions before the end of the year, so stay tuned for updates.

Kicking off: the first session

In July, the first session set the tone for the series by anchoring the community in what motivates individuals and member organisations to contribute to the regenerative agriculture movement. This grounding will be invaluable as the series progresses to more technical and practical aspects in future sessions.

What to expect next

The upcoming sessions will follow the steps identified by member organisations during participatory work, as outlined in SAI Platform’s Regenerating Together Transition Support Guide:

• Getting Resourced will delve into what it takes to prioritise value chain resilience, making a strong internal case for change, and mobilising both internal and external resources to achieve sustainability targets.
• Getting Grounded will highlight the importance of co-creating solutions with farmers and other value chain partners to ensure the solutions meet farmers’ needs and can adapt to local contexts.
• Getting Results will address the technical challenges and explore available solutions for measuring and tracking progress against the four core impact areas defined in the Regenerating Together Framework: soil health, biodiversity, water, and climate.
• Achieving a Just Transition will focus on enhancing equality and sharing risks equitably across value chains. Specifically, we will explore how farm-level transition roadmaps and MRV methods can be implemented in ways that build resilience and improve livelihoods for farmers in various contexts.
• Reaching the Tipping Point will tackle the challenge of scaling up. With best practice examples from earlier sessions, this session will candidly examine what it will take to bridge remaining gaps and extend this work across diverse value chains and the global farming community.
• Tying it All Together will connect the on-the-ground actions to the corporate claims that can be made, exploring issues of trust, transparency, assurance, and translatability in relation to the increased complexity of regenerative agriculture systems and the standards that support them.

GREENSBORO, N.C., USA, July 22, 2024 – Syngenta is excited to announce the integration of Cool Farm Tool (CFT) into the Cropwise Sustainability (CWS) application. CFT is a globally recognized carbon quantification tool that enables growers to start their sustainability journey by measuring estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on their farms, which they can now pair with custom recommendations from CWS to reduce their environmental footprint.

In 2021, the Sustainable and Responsible Business Team at Syngenta developed CWS and the Sustainable Outcomes in Agriculture standard with a vision to put actionable insights into the hands of growers. The farmer-first tool tracks and measures progress across six outcomes, including water impact and soil health — enabling growers to quickly identify opportunities for improvement and actionable insights to consider for their operation. Now, with the additional capability of the CFT module, growers are equipped with a simple tool to track and communicate their on-farm GHG emissions at a crop level. “The on-farm GHG calculator has been designed to empower growers,” said Richard Profit, CEO of the Cool Farm Alliance, which owns CFT. “It gives growers vital metrics to communicate about sustainability, show benefits of regenerative practices, carbon sequestration, and to report against reduction targets,” he said.

Beyond its use in the farming community, integrating CFT helps fulfill the CWS value proposition to simplify the value chain’s challenges around data collection. As a result, CFT is now used by many of the world’s leading food and beverage companies worldwide to provide greater clarity on the environmental impact of farming practices and communicate their sustainable ingredient sourcing efforts with ease.

CWS was also designed with vital safeguards and data protection in mind. “We developed the application understanding that data privacy was paramount to growers, agribusinesses, and us, as partners in the sustainability journey,” said Jeff Lail, Senior Data Analyst for Digital Ag Solutions at Syngenta. “Growers can be confident that their data is secure and only shared when and where they allow it.”

Background on the Sustainable Coffee Challenge

Launched in December 2015 and led by Conservation International, the Sustainable Coffee Challenge is a global coalition united in a vision to make coffee the world’s first sustainable agricultural product. The initiative brings together stakeholders from across the coffee sector to catalyse the necessary actions and investments to create a nature and people positive coffee sector. The Sustainable Coffee Challenge partners have pledged to an holistic set of sector targets, including to “secure 100 million tons of carbon” by 2025.

Cool Farm Coffee Working Group

The Cool Farm Coffee Working Group will serve as a forum for discussion and collaboration around the Cool Farm Platform, its application to coffee and to co-develop industry-wide guidance for carbon accounting and reduction. For 2024, the inaugural working group chair will be Flaam Hardy from Rainforest Alliance.

Call for Applications

We are inviting Cool Farm members and Sustainable Coffee Challenge partners with an interest in coffee to apply for membership in the Coffee Working Group. Members will contribute their expertise to developing the coffee tool in the Cool Farm Platform and may also recommend projects for science, methods, and software development.

To apply, send a short cover letter and CV to scc.consultant@conservation.org  and fhardy@ra.org preferably by July 12, 2024. Your cover letter should include:

• Relevant expertise and experience using the Cool Farm Tool in coffee
• Suggested activities for the Working Group
• Proposals on how the group should prioritise activities for 2024
