Agriculture and forestry-linked supply chains contribute over 9 Gt of CO2e emissions a year, with over 6 Gt of those emissions linked to commodities produced in the Global South – part of the world that is marred by measurement and data challenges. The Epoch-CFT integration significantly simplifies measurement at scale by solving for the needs and challenges of customers in the Global South, unlocking a path to scalable interventions that can be implemented across this region.

The integration facilitates easy access to critical datasets that are often harder to obtain in these regions, such as localised soil characteristics, climate data, and land management practices. This tailored approach ensures that even in areas where data infrastructure might be less developed, customers can still leverage the powerful tools provided by Epoch and Cool Farm to quantify their Scope 3 emissions.

It uniquely combines Epoch’s capabilities to quantify biomass emissions, biodiversity and water metrics along with supply chain data-sharing infrastructure with Cool Farm’s scientifically rigorous emissions calculations, offering a holistic view of carbon footprints across supply chains, while minimizing data requests to producers and farmers.

“The integration of Epoch with the Cool Farm Tool represents a significant step forward in our mission to empower farmers and supply chains globally with the tools they need to accurately measure and reduce their environmental impact. By combining our scientifically rigorous calculations with Epoch’s advanced data capabilities, we are enabling more informed decision-making and fostering actionable, nature-positive interventions. This partnership strengthens our collective ability to address the critical challenge of agricultural emissions and sequestration, particularly in the Global South, where it is most urgently needed.” Richard Profit, CEO, Cool Farm Alliance.

“The Cool Farm Tool, through the Cool Farm Alliance bring together learnings from over a decade of scientific collaboration across the food and agriculture industry – including farmers, multinational food corporations, NGOs, and universities. We are excited to bring together those learnings and this highly complementary set of capabilities to accelerate climate action across the industry.” Jinal Surti, Cofounder and CEO, Epoch.

This integration is enabling Lujeri Tea Estates Ltd. (Lujeri) in Malawi to streamline emissions reporting for both 13,000+ smallholder tea farmers, who are members of Sukambizi Association and their own estate properties, providing an accurate and verifiable carbon footprint for their tea production in Malawi.
The speed and simplification of this measurement and reporting has allowed Lujeri to focus their efforts on interventions, through collaboration with their supply chain partners.

“Epoch’s platform with CFT integration brought a simplified, efficient and practical approach that formulated the data we already had to compile a robust environmental assessment (including a comprehensive Scope 1, 2 and 3 assessment) that we are able to easily share with our supply chain partners to collaborate on environmental interventions designed to accelerate our path to net-zero” said Grant Bramsen, Managing Director, Lujeri Tea Estates.

For existing CFT users, the benefits of this integration include:

Comprehensive assessment of emissions leading to Product Carbon Footprint of their product

Significantly lowering the data burden on producers with Epoch’s ability to leverage geospatial datasets to automatically detect inputs like soil characteristics, history of land management changes and leverage global datasets like fertilizer use for default values.

Ultimately, this integration significantly simplifies measurement to enable companies to move to action through nature-positive interventions within their supply chains.

GREENSBORO, N.C., USA, July 22, 2024 – Syngenta is excited to announce the integration of Cool Farm Tool (CFT) into the Cropwise Sustainability (CWS) application. CFT is a globally recognized carbon quantification tool that enables growers to start their sustainability journey by measuring estimated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on their farms, which they can now pair with custom recommendations from CWS to reduce their environmental footprint.

In 2021, the Sustainable and Responsible Business Team at Syngenta developed CWS and the Sustainable Outcomes in Agriculture standard with a vision to put actionable insights into the hands of growers. The farmer-first tool tracks and measures progress across six outcomes, including water impact and soil health — enabling growers to quickly identify opportunities for improvement and actionable insights to consider for their operation. Now, with the additional capability of the CFT module, growers are equipped with a simple tool to track and communicate their on-farm GHG emissions at a crop level. “The on-farm GHG calculator has been designed to empower growers,” said Richard Profit, CEO of the Cool Farm Alliance, which owns CFT. “It gives growers vital metrics to communicate about sustainability, show benefits of regenerative practices, carbon sequestration, and to report against reduction targets,” he said.

Beyond its use in the farming community, integrating CFT helps fulfill the CWS value proposition to simplify the value chain’s challenges around data collection. As a result, CFT is now used by many of the world’s leading food and beverage companies worldwide to provide greater clarity on the environmental impact of farming practices and communicate their sustainable ingredient sourcing efforts with ease.

CWS was also designed with vital safeguards and data protection in mind. “We developed the application understanding that data privacy was paramount to growers, agribusinesses, and us, as partners in the sustainability journey,” said Jeff Lail, Senior Data Analyst for Digital Ag Solutions at Syngenta. “Growers can be confident that their data is secure and only shared when and where they allow it.”

The CWS application is free for users to download and begin making sustainable progress today.

About Syngenta
Syngenta Crop Protection and Syngenta Seeds are part of Syngenta Group, one of the world’s leading agriculture companies. Our ambition is to help safely feed the world while taking care of the planet. We aim to improve the sustainability, quality, and safety of agriculture with world-class science and innovative crop solutions. Our technologies enable millions of farmers around the world to make better use of limited agricultural resources.

Farm Carbon Cutting Toolkit, Cool Farm Alliance Community Interest Company and Agrecalc Limited have reached an agreement to work together to support UK agriculture to measure GHG emissions using the most up-to-date and accurate tools possible, harmonising the methodologies and outputs of their carbon calculation tools.

The three companies are looking forward to their joint work on this major challenge, to fulfil the requirements outlined in the comprehensive Report, compiled by ADAS throughout 2023. It is generally agreed that the overarching goal should be to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture through resource efficiency improvements, optimising production practices and mitigating environmental impacts.

Liz Bowles, Farm Carbon Toolkit CEO, said: “We are not seeking to reach a point where all three calculators will produce the same answer for any given dataset. As the Defra report put it, “ there is no single ‘right’ answer”. Rather we are striving to make it possible for users to fully understand why different calculators produce different answers.

“We plan to align with the Science-Based Targets initiative Forestry Land and Agriculture Guidance (SBTi FLAG) and draft Greenhouse Gas Protocol Land Sector Removals Guidance (GHGp LSRG) through our collaborative actions. This commitment underscores our dedication to maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring environmental sustainability in our operations, and in calculation outputs.”

Liz Bowles, Farm Carbon Toolkit CEO

Scott Davies, Agrecalc CEO, said: “It is intended that we agree on a common set of data sources which all three calculators will use. All calculators can go beyond these baseline requirements, and all parties to this MOU will retain their commercial independence. We will also involve the relevant government and other organisations’ teams with our work plan as we develop it.

“This collaborative approach supports a joint understanding of industry requirements and advancing consistency in our tools and methodologies. Our goal is collaboration with industry, trade bodies, and fellow calculator providers in the UK and internationally, so that we can actively contribute to the development of more consistent approaches to on-farm carbon calculation.”

Scott Davies, Agrecalc CEO

Richard Profit, Cool Farm Alliance CEO, said: “We are looking forward to this collaboration, as it will help align methodologies where that makes sense and that will especially allow us to look into new areas that require attention. How we then incorporate the new information in our calculators will vary from calculator to calculator as a result of our different base approaches.

“We will also ensure that the tools include the latest and most robust scientific findings into their frameworks and roadmaps.”

Richard Profit, Cool Farm Alliance CEO

The calculators are seeking that this joint work become the “agreed way” and at some point, become a minimum required standard for all calculators to adopt. The companies will engage in consultations with Defra, Welsh Government, Scottish Government, and Northern Ireland Government to reach a practical and realistic form of ongoing validation of their harmonisation work. Methodologies or other harmonisation solutions developed as a direct result of the MOU will be published transparently, or will otherwise be made available for others to use.

Bezannes (France), 14th of May 2024

MyEasyFarm, pioneer in Regenerative and Low Carbon Agriculture, announced the connection of its platform to Cool Farm Tool at the Cool Farm Annual Event 2024 in Amsterdam on the 23rd and 24th of April.

The Cool Farm Alliance is a not-for-profit membership organisation of over 160 members and partners, including the world’s largest agri-food companies, NGOs, academic institutions, farmers’ groups and agronomists.

The Cool Farm Alliance owns, manages and improves the Cool Farm Tool. Initially developed by the University of Aberdeen and funded by Unilever, the Cool Farm Tool is a an on-farm greenhouse gas calculator used by most of the world’s largest food and beverage companies to reveal changes that farmers can make to reduce emissions an sequester carbon with co-benefits for soil quality, water, biodiversity and farm economics.

MyEasyFarm has been part of the Cool Farm Alliance since 2021, and has participated in many exchanges with other members at the association’s annual meetings, which has reinforced the startup’s decision to connect its platform with Cool Farm Tool. In concrete terms, Cool Farm Tool is used as an embedded calculator in the MyEasyFarm platform, thanks to its connection by APIs, and enables the calculation of a farm’s carbon indicators based on data entered by the farmer. These indicators are then aggregated at cooperative or agro-industrial level, to track Scope 3 CO₂ emissions reductions or the achievement of Regenerative Agriculture specifications.

UK, July 05, 2023 – The Cool Farm Alliance (“CFA”), a nonprofit membership organisation founded to advance climate change mitigation and sustainability in the global agriculture industry, unveiled today plans for its Cool Farm Tool (CFT) to achieve yet another milestone in global applicability. The industry consortium will incorporate country-specific emissions factors, starting with Australia’s national inventory emission factors for cropping. These modifications, due to be completed by September 2023, will increase the CFT’s relevance in both Australian domestic and international markets, and streamline emission reporting for farmers and customers.

This project is the result of an extensive review and deliberation process that commenced with the Cool Soil Initiative (“CSI”) in Australia. The review concluded that country specific emissions factors within the CFT are crucial to accurately estimate on-farm emissions in Australian cropping. The CSI, an end-to-end supply chain programme for companies to demonstrate sustainable sourcing while supporting farmers in the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices in Australia, uses the Cool Farm Tool for its reporting due to its global acceptance by corporate investing partners.

Long recognised as one of the leading calculators for the global agriculture industry, the Cool Farm Tool is used in 150 countries to estimate GHG emissions, soil carbon sequestration, water stewardship, and biodiversity, among other critical ESG metrics. The Cool Farm Tool is supported by 140 leading companies and accessed by tens of thousands of users including farmers, crop advisors, and other agribusiness leaders each year. Australia-specific factors will enhance the Cool Farm Tool’s regional applicability.

In the coming months, the Cool Soil Initiative and Cool Farm Alliance will work together to incorporate country-specific emission factors that better account for crop residue and nitrogen input emission sources tracked in the CSI cropping programme, providing CSI farmers and corporate members with additional, actionable insights on their environmental footprints along with the confidence to make credible impact claims.

“The Cool Farm Alliance exists to pool resources and gather the highest levels of scientific expertise from all around the world. We’re supremely grateful to the Cool Soil Initiative team for their contributions and delighted to be working together to improve the Cool Farm Tool, in this case, by adapting it to extensively researched emission factors that better reflect the specific cropping conditions in Australia,” said Daniella , CFA’s Head of Impact and Collaboration.

The planned tool extensions, focused on tailoring crop residue, fertilizer- and other N input- induced emissions, will improve the alignment between Cool Soil Initiative supply chain emission reporting with Australia’s National GHG Inventory methods. More broadly, the partnership sets an important global precedent and call-to-action for greater regionalisation in climate assessments – which will be essential to ensure that accurate and transparent monitoring, reporting, and verification takes place around net-zero progress.

“This is a significant moment for on-farm emission reporting in Australia. Farmers and companies tell us they want streamlined reporting that aligns with both domestic and global market needs, and that recognises the unique conditions under which Australian farmers grow food and fibre,” Dr Cassandra Schefe, Project Lead for the Cool Soil Initiative, remarked on the launch of the partnership.

“As farmers and supply chain companies continue to work on understanding and reducing their emissions, it’s essential to have reputable, science-based tools that work throughout the supply chain and in all markets. And that’s what the plan launched today is all about.”

The program formed in 2018 with initial investment from Mars Petcare with Kellogg, Manildra Group and Allied Pinnacle joining with Charles Sturt University and Food Agility CRC in 2020. Combining on-farm extension and research to lower emissions and build soil fertility, CSI continues to scale its geographic reach and membership base, with Corson Grains and PepsiCo ANZ the latest companies to join.
