Following the recent achievement of third-party assurance by the Carbon Trust, the Cool Farm Platform continues to strengthen its position as a credible, science-based tool for modelling and managing on-farm greenhouse gas emissions.

This milestone reinforces confidence in the platform’s methodology, supporting transparent and reliable carbon footprint assessments across a range of agricultural systems, including crops, rice, potato, dairy, and beef.

To help members and stakeholders better understand what this means in practice, we are hosting a 45-minute insights session with Cool Farm and the Carbon Trust.

In this session, we will:

Explain the difference between assurance and verification

Unpack what this milestone means in practical terms

Explore how members can confidently use the platform for reporting and decision-making

The session will be led by Dr Megan McKerchar, Head of Science and Methods at Cool Farm Alliance, alongside Paschalena Mavrou from the Carbon Trust.

On 2nd October (14:00–15:30 BST) we’ll host the next session in our Regen Reflections webinar series, focusing on what a Just Transition looks like in the move towards regenerative agriculture.

Before we look ahead, it feels like the right time to pause and reflect on the lessons we’ve gathered so far.

To move towards a regenerative system, we need to act now. But knowing which steps to take can be challenging.

Our Regen Reflections webinars are designed to support members in taking the next step, whether that means starting out on the journey or tackling the next big challenge. Each session explores the actions we need to create a regenerative food system. Together, they form part of a learning journey, where we generate and share knowledge to inspire action across our community.

Here are some of the key takeaways:

Data drives change.

Jon Calland (Tilda Rice) showed how detailed data collection supported carbon reductions while also improving soil health, biodiversity and pest control. Their initiative in India cut pesticide use by 70 percent while boosting yields and farmer incomes.

Broad metrics unlock multiple benefits.

Joseph Gridley, Matt Ryan and Ben Makowieck shared how using a broad set of metrics helps unlock benefits for farmers, ecosystems and the wider value chain. This approach encourages farmer buy-in while also meeting corporate needs.

Benchmarking guides next steps.

Geert Van Aelst explained how data reporting and benchmarking helped Suedzucker identify clear pathways to regeneration while reducing their GHG footprint.

On-the-ground measurement matters.

Annie Leeson and Ashley Swan (First Milk) showed how measuring soil carbon at both field and landscape level supports farmers in adopting regenerative practices while building wider supply-chain insight.

Mindset is the key.

Jess de Boer reminded us that shifting mindset is often the most important step in unlocking the full value of regenerative agriculture at farm level.

Co-creation creates lasting change.

Jo Lawrence and Sophie Gregory emphasised how working directly with farmers to design and implement regenerative agriculture programmes ensures that data and insights bring value to all, while creating change that sticks.

Looking Ahead: Our October Webinar

While we’ve learned a lot from our recent focus on results, our journey doesn’t stop here. On 2nd October (15:00–16:30 CET) we’ll continue the conversation with our next Regen Reflections session, held in collaboration with SAI Platform.

This webinar will be hosted by Rebecca Hesketh and Siobhan Bradley, who will lead an open and honest discussion on what a Just Transition looks like in practice. Together, we’ll explore how a regenerative system can be built around the needs of farmers—supporting resilience on the ground while ensuring fair and sustainable incomes.

It’s an opportunity to hear directly from voices working in the field, to share challenges, and to gather insights that can guide the next steps on our collective journey.

It’s safe to say we’ve covered a lot in just three webinars. We’ve personally learned so much from listening to our speakers and we’re excited for what comes next.

They discussed how the two biodiversity frameworks call „Task Force on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)“ and „Science-Based Targets Network (SBTN)“ help design a nature positive agriculture.

Alain, who is also a professor at AgroParisTech and had a long career as a public researcher in France and internationally, was the technical director of SBTN in 2021 and is an active part of the TNFD. In his presentation, he focused on:

A REFLECTION ON OUR AGRICULTURAL MODEL;

WHAT THE FRAMEWORKS HAVE IN COMMON AND HOW THEY DIFFER FROM EACH OTHER;

HOW THEY HELP DESIGN A NEW AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION PARADIGM; AND

HOW REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE HAS A NET-POSITIVE IMPACT ON FARM AND LANDSCAPE LEVEL.

Dr. Megan McKerchar highlighted three targets of the SBTN where the Cool Farm biodiversity metric can help:

NO CONVERSION OF NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS: THE BIODIVERSITY METRIC ALLOWS REPORTING OF LARGE AREAS OF NATURAL HABITAT

LAND FOOTPRINT REDUCTION: THE BIODIVERSITY METRIC MEASURES THE TOTAL AREA OF PRODUCTIVE LAND MANAGED BY FARMERS AND ALLOWS THEM TO TRACK THIS OVER TIME.

LANDSCAPE ENGAGEMENT: THE BIODIVERSITY METRIC COLLECTS DATA ON LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT AND PROVIDES A QUANTITATIVE MEASURE OF HOW FARM/LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT SUPPORTS AND IMPACTS BIODIVERSITY.

Especially for the third target, Alain Vidal mentioned that the best way to translate landscape engagement for agricultural activities and land use and achieve the target against SBTN criteria is through regenerative agriculture.

The inspiring discussion highlighted what is both possible and profitable while also addressing the urgency and complexity of achieving carbon neutrality in dairy systems. The speakers and projects featured emphasised the crucial role of collaboration, context-specific innovations, and the prioritisation of methane reduction strategies. Scalability and cost of environmentally sound climate solutions remain challenging, but as many solutions have multiple co-benefits, the challenge is in enabling and supporting the changes with effective communication, education and incentives to drive the adoption of more sustainable dairy practices, allowing for the diversity of ideas and farm types to each find their path forward and at an accelerated rate of innovation and change.

Facilitated by Daniella Malin, Cool Farm Alliance’s Head of Impact and Collaboration, the webinar was packed with practical tips for mitigating GHG emissions in dairy supply chains, with the focus on -farms. The expert speakers were from three valued Cool Farm Alliance member companies, Groupe Bel, Nestlé and Straus Family Creamery. These top-tier managers and specialists, including Othaman Alqaisi, Senior R&D Animal Science Specialist at Nestlé (a large company), Brechtje de Schipper, Corporate Milk Expert at Group-Bel (a medium-sized company), and Joseph Button, Vice President of Sustainability and Strategic Impact (representing a small company), brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion. Their insights and expertise made this event a must-watch for anyone passionate about the future of sustainable dairy farming.

Here are our top level learnings from the webinar:

1. Collaboration is essential

The journey to achieving net zero in dairy farming requires collaboration, resources, and context-specific innovations across regions and typologies of dairy farm systems.

2. Prioritise methane reduction

Prioritisation of solutions that reduce methane emissions has the most potential for driving innovation and income in dairy farms.

3. Overcome scalability and cost challenges

Like most climate solutions, scalability and cost are the major challenges of implementing climate solutions in the dairy sector.

4. Embrace diversity of ideas

Diversity of ideas can spur acceleration of innovative solutions for net zero success in dairy farming.

Join us in exploring a future of net zero success in dairy farming. Remember, the future commences right here, right now.

Globally, the livestock sector is a significant contributor to human nutrition, encouraging extensive trade among different countries, and delivering economic growth. However, the entire livestock supply chain from production to consumption has a relatively large carbon footprint that represents 14.5% of human-induced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Dairy cattle in particular due to methane emissions (a GHG that is 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide on a 100-year timescale) are a significant contributor to the dairy industry’s carbon footprint and environmental implications. Thus, there is an urgent need for the dairy industry to move towards environmental sustainability and meet its net zero emissions goal by 2050.

This need and urgency in chasing net-zero solutions for dairy farming is the rationale behind our thought leadership webinar on the future of dairy farming. The Cool Farm Alliance has a diverse membership including leading dairy companies that have a collective technical know-how of best practices in dairy operations. We invited three of our members, Bel, Nestlé, and Straus Family Creamery – to engage in a dynamic discussion about the future of dairy farming. They will share practical insights drawn from their experiences in sustainable dairy operations and present actionable strategies to curtail the sector’s carbon footprint.

This webinar, facilitated by Daniella Malin, Cool Farm Alliance’s Head of Impact and Collaboration aims to:

Inspire the dairy community by sharing good ideas and good practices from around the world to motivate them to strive to achieve net zero emissions.

Challenge the dairy community to identify barriers and opportunities to reach net zero emissions which will help them to build the community, energy, initiatives, motivation, and networks needed to usher in a positive future.

“Share how innovative dairy farming methods have the dual benefit of mitigating climate change and improving the economic viability of farmers.”

Brechtje de Schipper, Corporate Milk Expert at Bel, plans to:

“Emphasise why we need to act now for net zero success in dairy farming. And share Bel’s practical experiences on the field to motivate other dairy actors to work together for the transformation necessary for a sustainable future of dairy farming”

Othman Alqaisi Shawabkeh, the Senior R&D Animal Science Specialist at Nestlé, is enthusiastic about:

“Describing interventions to reduce carbon footprint from milk production and presenting Nestlé‘s net-zero roadmap towards better future dairy.”

Webinar date: Tuesday, 5th September 2023
